Mendocino Coast Prepares For 22nd Annual Whale Festivals

Each March for the past 22 years, the communities of Mendocino and Fort Bragg have hosted Whale Festivals to commemorate the migration of the great gray whales.

This year the Mendocino Whale Festival will be March 6th & 7th, with more than 20 Mendocino County wineries offering their unique vintages for tasting in the village’s galleries, shops and inns.  The free  trolley will be waiting to whisk you off to participating merchants and nearby events.  Also taking place will be a chowder tasting, whale watching walks, “plein air” or outdoor painting done by artists on the Headlands, arts and crafts, food booths and an evening concert.  The nearby Point Cabrillo Light Station & Preserve hosts activities for young and old alike, from games to educational whale walks.

The Fort Bragg Whale Festival is slated for March 20th & 21st when more than 15 Premier California Microbrewers offer their best pilsners, stouts and ales for tasting in historic Eagle’s Hall.  Other events include a 5K and 10K Whale Run & Walk on the beach, classic car show, chowder tasting, and guided whale walks at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and in some Mendocino Coast State Parks.  While in Fort Bragg, don’t forget to plan a whale watching adventure on the sea with Whale Watching Charter Boats out of Noyo Harbor.   On both weekends the Point Cabrillo Light Station & Preserve will be open with gray whale exhibits, marine science displays and guided tours.
