MENDO WINE TOURS
by Pat Fusco

Mendocino’s Anderson Valley has been discovered by increasing numbers of wine enthusiasts. The small highway that connects busy Route 101 with the coast passes through a spectacular landscape of vineyards, orchards and woodlands.

Wineries along the way tempt visitors to experience unique vintages produced by the region’s terroir, but a dilemma confronts the cautious. Is it wise to indulge in generous tastes of a crisp Sauvignon Blanc or hearty Pinot Noir while maneuvering the twists and turns of Route 128?

As of December there is a pleasurable way to explore these exciting wines without getting behind the wheel. Mendo Wine Tours is the creation of three friends who grew up in Mendocino and recognized the need for such a service.

They bought a stretch SUV - a Ford Excursion fitted with a long bench seat opposite a handsome built-in bar. Then they hired responsible local drivers. "The emphasis is on safety," says co-owner Jed Ayres, "but the business is also about giving people a luxurious and comfortable trip."

Each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the tour leaves Mendocino at 10 am, beginning with a celebratory glass of sparkling wine. Visits are made to distinctly different wineries, from elegant Roederer to picturesque little Husch. Instead of traditional crackers, classic breads accompanied by artisanal cheeses will accompany tastings. Ten wineries are participating in the program, a chance to sample rare wines from barrels and reserve collections and an excellent opportunity to purchase them. Discounts are available at most places.

Mid-tour a stop for lunch is out-of-doors or in a private room at one of the wineries, depending on the weather. Each passenger receives an individual basket packed with a gourmet picnic lunch from the kitchens of MacCallum House Restaurant.

Cost of the day-long tour is $125 per person. Reservations may be made online, at several shops in the village, or through fifteen participating lodgings. Private tours may be arranged.
