Winter / Spring 2008
Clare Barca
Artistic Director of the Mendocino Opera Fresca
Mendocino local native Clare Barca cut her lyric-coloratura soprano teeth on three decades of solo, ensemble and operatic roles, Clare envisioned an unlimited horizon for the future of Mendocino County performing arts when she co-founded the Mendocino Opera Fresca in 1996, taking the reins as Artistic Director in 2000. Since that time, she has continuously challenged the company’s previous accomplishments to usher in, as recently described by the Mendocino Rotary, a new standard of excellence in the arts on the Mendocino Coast. Barca was the recipient of the prestigious National Goldovsky Foundation Internship Award in 2006.
Known for her ingenious artistic creativity and indefatiguable enthusiasm, Barca continues to make roads for the further advancement of Mendocino Opera Fresca. Her successful Emerging Artists Program, which has had great success in the last two years, brings young professionals from across the nation for the cultural enrichment and entertainment of the residents and visitors alike.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Barca is putting the finishing touches on a new Redwoods Opera Workshop, a June, 2008 Mendocino Coast 10-day training for young budding artists, with the most highly respected national Goldovsky educators.
Be sure to catch this rising star at the helm of one of the brightest constellations the Mendocino Coast has known next April, 2008, for the Spring Opera Festival, featuring Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, with an international cast of the best and brightest emerging talents, or perhaps, for a walk on a more wild side, her upcoming Piaf: No Regrets montage.
